Poker

The most common type of poker is Texas Hold’Em, which originated in the Mississippi River in the early nineteenth century. The game was spread by gambling riverboats on the Mississippi. In the 1830s, it was widely popular in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The name “Poker” was later attached to several earlier games. However, the game was not invented until the nineteenth century. Its origins are disputed, but it is generally believed that the game was invented by Jonathan H. Green.

The game of poker is played with chips, which are usually dealt in sets of three, four, or five. Each chip is worth a different amount. The lowest value chip is the white chip. The red chip is worth five whites, while the blue chip is worth two, four, or five reds. Players “buy in” to the game by buying in with the same amount of chips. If the game involves seven or more players, all the chips should be distributed equally.

A player may be required to contribute to the pot before the game begins. This contribution is called an ante. The first player to bet is known as a “bet” and the second player to call a previous player is known as a “call.” A raise is when a player bets more money than the previous player had bet. Finally, a player can check in without betting. If a player has checked in without betting, he or she is said to be in the hand. The betting interval ends when one or more players check out of the game.
